NLD lawyer killed at Yangon airport

Prominent Muslim lawyer U Ko Ni has been shot dead at Yangon International Airport, National League for Democracy officials have confirmed to Frontier.

Ko Ni, a legal adviser to the NLD, was shot dead while returning to Myanmar from a trip abroad, according to U Win Htein, a senior member of the NLD. The suspect was arrested and a taxi driver was seriously injured, Win Htein said.

Photos of a man in a pink t-shirt covered in blood, identified as the chief suspect, were quickly shared on social media.

Ko Ni, a respected figure in Myanmar’s legal community was a rare outspoken voice for the country’s Muslim population.

On January 27, Ko Ni posted on his Facebook page photos of him visiting sights in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.
