NAY PYI TAW — The government plans to install 150 new power transformers in Yangon in an effort to provide a more steady supply of electricity, officials said yesterday.
Regular power outages over the past month – attributed by Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation to system failure – have left Yangon residents sweltering amid an El Nino-fuelled heatwave. The government has come in for criticism for failing to properly explain the reasons for the outages.
Ministry of Electric Power and Energy spokesperson U San Yu said the infrastructure would enable the ministry to power more homes, and was one of a number of projects identified for implementation in the government’s first 100 days.
Under its “100-day project” the ministry plans to add more than 15,000 households to the national grid across Nay Pyi Taw, Kachin and Kayah states, and Sagaing, Magway and Ayeyarwady regions.

Another project is designed to improve the safety of electrical infrastructure, he added.
