Episode 46: The human trafficking scourge

Despite widespread efforts by authorities, human trafficking remains a major issue in Myanmar. The problem is so bad that in its 2018 Trafficking in Persons report, the US State Department downgraded Myanmar to Tier 3.

It is common for Myanmar people to move abroad in search of work, but those who do so without the correct documentation, are at risk of exploitation at the hands of dishonest brokers.

This week, Doh Athan speaks to survivors of human trafficking abroad, many who have undergone horrendous hardships, but a lack of job opportunities back home means that some are considering going abroad once more in search of work.
