Many workers brought to criminal hubs in Southeast Asia have no idea what they’re getting themselves into, but some are seeking a payday despite the risks. Frontier spoke to two workers – one in online gambling the other in online scams – about their daily lives, working conditions and what brought them to Shwe Kokko.
After the former military government embraced market reforms in the early 1990s, SAIL Advertising was the first Myanmar marketing company to cater to international clients. Times have changed. In transitional Myanmar, advertising agencies are ghting for business. Frontier asked SAIL founder Dr Anna Khin Khin Kyawt, who’s also president of the Myanmar Marketing Services Association, about the changing advertising market and the challenges ahead.
Dutch brewer Heineken has entered Myanmar’s increasingly competitive beer market, opening a US$60 million brewery in a joint venture with a domestic partner at Hmawbi, about 30 miles north of Yangon. Lester Tan, the managing director of the APB ABC joint venture, spoke to Frontier about the company’s plans for Myanmar and its strategy for challenging Myanmar Beer’s dominant share of the market.
Parliament has so far approved two of the four bills known as the protection of race and religion laws. The Health Care for Population Control Bill was signed into law by President U Thein Sein after receiving approval in May. Earlier this month approved the Inter-faith Marriage Bill and it was submitted to the President to be enacted.
