The Asian Development Bank has announced a new country partnership strategy for Myanmar, which it said will help support the government’s target of boosting economic growth and creating jobs.
In a statement published on March 29, ADB said the 2017-2021 strategy is aimed at strengthening access in rural and urban markets, building a skilled workforce and increasing employment opportunities and promoting reforms that will help to modernise the economy.
“ADB’s operations will focus on areas that are of fundamental importance to the country’s development,” said Mr James Nugent, Director General of ADB’s Southeast Asia Department, highlighting access to transport, electricity and urban infrastructure. “These sectors will also transform the rural sector, boost productivity, create quality jobs and, ultimately, improve people’s livelihoods.”
The release said that ADB’s operations in Myanmar will focus on infrastructure development, in particular energy, transport and urban development.
U Kyaw Win, minister for planning and finance, said the CPS is fully aligned with the government’s policy priorities.

“We welcome ADB’s support as our country accelerates its transition and builds the foundations for inclusive and sustainable growth,” he was quoted as saying in the release.
