Dr Aye Zan poised to be new Mon chief minister

By NYAN HLAING LYNN | FRONTIER

NAY PYI TAW — The National League for Democracy has nominated Dr Aye Zan (NLD, Kyaikto-2) to take the role of Mon State chief minister, following the departure of U Min Min Oo.

Min Min Oo submitted his resignation letter on Saturday, which the NLD accepted, senior party member U Win Htein told Frontier.

President U Htin Kyaw has not officially accepted the resignation because he is currently in Chin State commemorating Chin National Day, which took place on Tuesday, said government spokesperson U Zaw Htay.

Aye Zan, 62, is an ethnic Mon who has been an NLD member since it was founded in 1988. He successfully ran for the Kyaiktyo seat in the 1990 general election, the results of which were later annulled by the military junta. He is currently chairman of the NLD’s Kyaiktyo branch.

There was some surprise when Min Min Oo was appointed chief minister last year due to his lack of experience. A report in Mon News published in March, after the appointment, said “people in the state expected that either Dr Aye Zan or Min Htin Aung Han [state minister for electric power] would be most likely nominated for the post”.
