NLD rejects ‘fake’ Shwe Mann statement

By HTUN KHAING | FRONTIER

YANGON — Senior National League for Democracy officials say a recent statement appointing Thura U Shwe Mann as a party central executive committee member is fake.

The statement concerning Shwe Mann, a former general and Union Solidarity and Development Party leader, appeared online on June 24, as the NLD was holding a CEC meeting in Yangon. It was apparently signed by CEC member U Nyan Win and carried the seal of the NLD headquarters.

“The statement … was a fake one and it was intended to give the wrong impression,” the party said in a statement.

At a press conference at the party headquarters, Nyan Win told reporters the statement was “totally fake”.

Spokesperson U Win Htein said it was likely aimed at “giving people the wrong impression” about the NLD.

“There are those who always keep an eye on whatever NLD is doing. Whenever the opportunity comes, they are ready to create misunderstanding among the people and NLD. It is not the first time,” Win Htein said.

He did not speculate as to who might have been responsible for the statement.
