President U Thein Sein has sent a letter to the National League for Democracy, congratulating the party with it’s “victory” and promising to respect the “decision of the voters”.
The letter was sent to the NLD on the afternoon of November 11, after which the President’s Office posted it on Facebook.
The President wrote: “I thank you for your cooperation in holding stable and peaceful elections on November 8. I congratulate the National League for Democracy, which according to reports of the Union Election Commission is currently leading, with its victory.”
U Thein Sein also vowed to cooperate with the NLD to guarantee stability in the post-election period and to hand over power at “the right time in accordance with the decision of the voters.”
With regards to a request sent by NLD-leader Aung San Suu Kyi to meet, the President was careful. U Thein Sein wrote that he “will negotiate about meeting Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, after the Union Election Commission has wrapped up the electoral process.”
