YANGON — The Union Election Commission announced the winners of 33 Amyotha Hluttaw constituencies at noon on Thursday November 12.
Of the seats confirmed, 18 were won by the National League for Democracy. The other main winners in this round of results are the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (6 seats), and the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (3 seats).
Striking is that the USDP took the Upper House seat in Maungdaw North and that the Arakan National Party won in Maungdaw South, both in Northern Rakhine State. Maungdaw is a predominantly Muslim area. Almost all Muslim voters in Maungdaw were disenfranchised earlier this year, when the white cards they held were revoked by Presidential decree.
Another prominent winner is well know blogger and director of civil society organisation MIDO, Nay Phone Latt. He won the seat in Yangon’s Thingangyun constituency.
