YANGON — United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has congratulated the Myanmar people for “their patience, dignity and enthusiasm” as they participated in Sunday’s historic elections, his spokesperson said.
Mr Ban also encouraged all stakeholders “to maintain their dignified spirit, calm and respect throughout the completion of the electoral process,” spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told journalists at a regular daily briefing at UN headquarters in New York on November 9.
Prefacing the briefing by saying that Mr Ban would be making “more considered comments” on the election in the coming days, Mr Dujarric said the UN chief congratulations were directed to the broad masses of the people from all walks of life.
The UN chief had described the election as “epochal”, the spokesperson said.
Mr Dujarric said Mr Ban had also commended the Union Election Commission as well as its various state, regional and local institutions for their important work.
