FAQs
-
Why do you offer memberships?
-
We launched memberships in 2020 to ensure Frontier’s long-term survival. Revenue from advertising was declining, and we didn’t want to rely entirely on grants. We believed that many of our readers felt a shared sense of mission and cared enough about what we were doing that they would support us financially.
Becoming a Frontier member isn’t the same as taking a subscription. Our aim is to build a community around people who care about independent journalism in Myanmar, and create opportunities to collaborate and engage with us. Contributions from Frontier members also help to support our award-winning journalism, which we make widely available through a metered rather than hard paywall (and our Burmese content is free entirely). As a member, though, you’ll also get access to a range of exclusive benefits that aren’t available to non-members.
-
Why do you have a paywall?
-
We introduced a metered paywall in 2025 because we believe our work is worth paying for. In an increasingly difficult funding environment, it was unsustainable to keep making all of it available for free and memberships are one of the few ways that we can cover our costs. We are mindful that not everyone is in a position to pay, though. All of our Burmese-language content remains freely accessible, and anyone can read one paywalled article a month by creating a Frontier account, evening
-
Besides access to the website, what else do members get?
-
We provide members with a range of additional benefits, including a regular peek behind-the-scenes at Frontier, additional political analysis and access to regular online and in-person events. Our newsletters include Political Insider, which is sent out every fortnight, a Daily Briefing focused on the latest developments in Myanmar and a Media Monitor of the top stories from print and online Myanmar-language media.
-
Where can I find out more about your Daily Briefing and Media Monitor newsletters?
-
Both the Daily Briefing and Media Monitor are published every weekday. If you’d like to know more, get in touch with us on members@frontiermyanmar.net and we’d be happy to set up a free trial.
Yes, this is a new feature that we’ve developed. Members can now read a full archive of Daily Briefing, Media Monitor, Political Insider and Frontier Backstage by clicking the “Newsletters” drop-down at the top of the page. The newsletter archive dates back to late 2019 and is fully searchable, making it perfect for anyone doing research on a Myanmar-related topic.
-
I’ve registered to receive the Frontier Fridays newsletter but I’m not paying anything. Am I a member?
-
Thank you! That means you’re part of the Frontier community. By registering, you can access one paywalled article a month on our website and receive some newsletters, including Frontier Fridays. But to get full access to the website (including our archive), receive our exclusive newsletters and attend most events, you’ll need to sign up as a member, starting at US$10 a month, billed annually.
You can sign up by clicking here and choosing one of the membership packages. If you haven’t already registered, you’ll be asked to create an account and then proceed to payment. You’ll immediately gain access to all of our content, including our archive of newsletters (depending on your membership level).
-
I want to become a member but I don’t have a credit card. Can I pay for a membership with cash or by direct deposit?
-
Credit card is the fastest way to set up a membership, but we always try our best to accommodate a range of payment options. Send us an email at members@frontiermyanmar.net and we’ll organise this for you. Please note that if you use other payment methods it may take longer to set up your account.
-
Can I buy a membership for my team?
-
Yes, absolutely. Whether you work for an embassy, NGO, businesses, university or something else, we offer team packages for institutions of all shapes and sizes. You can find out more about team memberships and also sign up here.
-
How do I log in to my Frontier account?
-
Click the “Login” button at the top of the screen and enter your email address and password. If you don’t have an account already, you can follow the link to create one. If you’ve forgotten your password, you can reset it.
After logging in, you can navigate to the members area by clicking the drop-down button in the top right corner and selecting “My Account”. In the members area you can change your password, upgrade your membership, change your payment details, cancel your membership and more.
-
After paying, will I get an invoice?
-
After you’ve made payment, a receipt will automatically be sent to your registered email address. You can also download an invoice within your membership area, by clicking on “Change your billing details” and scrolling down to your invoice history.
-
When does my membership renew?
-
All memberships (both individual and team) are for one year from the date of payment. If paying by credit card, they are defaulted to auto renew but you can change that at any time. If you pay through another method, such as cash or a bank transfer, we will send you an invoice around a month before your team membership is due to expire. If you don’t make payment by the deadline your team membership will be suspended until the outstanding amount is received.
You can cancel your membership at any time by logging into your account and navigating to the members area, clicking “Change your billing details” and then “Cancel subscription”. You’ll still receive the benefits of Frontier membership for the remainder of your billing period, and after that you can continue to enjoy our community newsletters and one paywalled article a month. We may occasionally check in to see if you’d like to rejoin.
